Torre Two Cents………

So we are in day three of the drama that is the New York media and the Joe Torre situation.  The good news for the Yankee fans, is it seems like cooler heads have prevailed, and they are taking a wait and see attitude with Torre.  Only in New York would a manager with Torre’s resume be subjected to such scrutiny.  One thing is for sure if the Yanks fired Torre, I would take him as a Red Sox skipper, give Francona a few buxs to go away.  If anyone needs to go it is Brian Cashman, he is the one that put together that line-up and starting pitching.  Cashman is the one who signed Octavio Dotel for the bullpen, Cashman also signed a 285 year old Randy Johnson, it was also Cashman who signed the oft-injured Carl (I Like Hot Chicks) Pavono to a four year deal.  I guess it is easier to point the finger in another direction if you are Yankee brass.  I mean who wants to admit they built a 230 million dollar team that only won a single playoff game?

I disagree with you that Cashman needs to go. If anything he should be applauded for what he didn’t do, and that’s trade Cano, Wang, Hughes, or Cabrera when Matsui and Sheffield went down, or even at the deadline. He didn’t make any rash moves that could have mortgaged the future as well.

As for the signees you mentioned, though they may not have panned out as hoped, I think you can go around the league and tear apart many bad signings or trades. Jason Johnson. Rudy Seanez. Javy Lopez. Julian Tavarez until the end of the year. If you go the Randy Johnson route, you can throw David Wells into that boat. I know you’re a realistic Sox fan, so I’m not thinking you’ll defend Theo on his moves, or better yet on his lack of moves, specifically at the deadline.

It’s going to be a rough stretch in the coming weeks for the Yankees. Canning Torre isn’t the answer. There was an analogy of sorts left in the comments over on Bleeding Pinstripes latest post. It really fits. And credit to Sal for leaving it:

“Well I dont know what makes a team go dead like that. My boat used to just conk out like that too. I’d be humming along, and then all of a sudden, it would quit. I spent alot of money trying to get it fixed. Some momentary relief, but in the long run, the same problems kept popping up. Its strangely familiar. I agreed with mr sherry then and now. Sell the boat, not the captain.” Getting rid of Joe won’t solve anything.

I agree with J in the fact that Cashman shouldn’t be the one to get the axe. He made some good moves in picking up Abreu and for not mortgaging the future to do it. We know have options for Sheffield and Giambi and could use those guys now as trade bait for some better pitching, bullpen or otherwise. I couldn’t really pin the blame on any coach, I would put the blame on the offense for not stepping up to pick up the pitching, but again I give even more credit to the Tigers for having 2 Pitchers shut down the Yankee offense, and that is probably the biggest factor in why we got our a$$es handed to us.

Cashman cannot be blamed for some of the moves, especially the ones made before he solidified his authority over George’s “inner circle”. You can’t blame him for Pavano when there were 3 other teams, including the Red Sox, who were very interested. As far as Johnson is concerned, that has George written all over it. Dotel was just a shot, if it worked…great, but they weren’t truly counting on him. You can put the blame on him for losing Leiber and signing Wright.
