What do me and Ben Affleck have in common, if you guessed today being our birthday you would have guessed right. Affleck was born August 15, 1972, and I was born August 15, 1971, and we are both Red Sox fans, but we share one more thing in common. The Boston Red Sox give us the same thing for our birthday every year, a stinking defeat. A strange but true stat, the Red Sox have now lost nine games straight on August 15th. This of course further proves that I am indeed cheering for the right team. With Curt Schilling on the mound tonight I thought my birthday curse would end. Curt did his best, and pitched pretty well thru six, had a small hiccup in the seventh, but overall looked like vintage Schilling. Wily Mo Pena booted a ball in the 9th, leading to a run that might have scored anyway. One-Two-Three 9th inning, and the curse of August 15th lives on!!!!
Happy Birthday Jonathan, even though your team lost and the Yankees won. Curt indeed did look good, and I didn't see what happened in the 9th but obviously it wasn't in your favor.

Watch the replay again. WMP had a more difficult play than it looked, if he made the catch AND threw out the runner it would have been a GREAT play, not a routine play.
He was running at full speed in a direction that probably would have had him crashing into or glancing off of the Pesky Pole after making the catch. Normally thats no problem and he makes the catch. In this situation it is a routine catch (good but not great).
But WMP knows he needs to make a quick strong throw to home after catching it, so he has to change the direction of his momentum before catching the ball so his momentum is more toward home plate. In this way he can make the quick and accurate throw after the catch, but it is easier said than done when you are 245 lbs, thats a lot of momentum there.
So he couldnt do it, but still got the out at first. By trying to change his position on the run before catching the ball in order to make the throw he needed to make, this caused him to miss the catch, and the run scored.
Coco probably makes the catch because he knows with his arm he has no chance to throw anyone out no matter how he is positioned.
So you have a choice, WMP catches the ball, crashes into the pole or not, but at least has to take some time to set up to make a strong throw, and the throw is late because of the extra time need to set up for the throw given Guillens speed, and the run scores.
Or WMP doesn't make the catch and the run scores, which is what happened.
Either way, the run scores.
Of course, we all wish WMP made the great play, but we cant rag on a guy for not making a great play. WMP is a good centerfielder, but he is simply average in RF despite a great arm
Now if this is a fly ball that WMP is set up waiting for the ball to drop into his glove, in the same location, the runner doesnt even try to go, and WMP makes the catch. But it wasn't, so the runner was going and it was going to come down to how quickly the throw could be made after the catch, and how accurate and strong the throw was. You needed all 3 elements, quick release, strong throw, accurate throw, after the catch. No catch, so we will never know what would have happened if WMP caught it.
Sorry if this was a little redundant
