Well...Well...Well
Well the good news is the Red Sox's dispatched of Scott Kazmir and the Devil Rays 8-4 tonight. The bad news is, for the second time in 3 games a Red Sox pitcher was beaned by a batted ball and was the worse for it. Early reports from Red Sox Thomas Gill is that it is a deep contusion in his right knee, complicating the matter is that it is the same knee that Wells had surgery on this off season and the one he has rehabbing this entire season. Glass half full thinking is Wells looked great against a good hitting team thru 4 1/3 innings, had a low pitch count, had given up one run on 4 hits with no walks.
The Red Sox's bullpen was a little shaky tonite giving up 3 runs and eight hits over the final 4 and 2/3. Last season however, if the Sox bullpen had to go that many innings that total could have doubled. Jonathan Papelbon recored his 17th save in as many tries this season. In a related story, after an hour rain delay in the 9th inning at Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers were able to get thier last half of the inning in, scoring 1 run, but falling a little short with steriod lover Jason Giambi grounding into a game inning double play with the captain Derek Jeter just 90 feet away waiting to tie the score. The loss drops the Yanks two back of the Red Sox.
